WE are always hearing that Britain’s high streets are having a tough time, but if the High Street in Stockbridge was the only one you ever visited, you’d never believe the news.

Shops are full and wellstocked and thronging with customers drawn from a wide area.

On my visit to Lilles tea room I recognised a couple who lived at least 30 miles away.

Lillies offers a quaint addition to the street scene and obviously provides what people want.

In common with the other eating establishments, it was packed with satisfied diners when I called, although they just managed to find a space for two.

As this is a tea room it would have been unthinkable not to have sampled the tea here.

The brews on offer provided a wide choice but I chose a standard pot, which was just what was needed after a walk around the shops.

It would be hard to imagine a more delicious brew than that which was offered but I did.

So I ordered an Assam tea which, with its stronger taste, continued to delight the palate.

Both of us chose jacket potato meals – one with prawns and mine with sausages (locally sourced).

My choice evoked a few giggles from neighbouring diners who had never seen the combination served at a tea room I presume.

I enjoyed the last laugh though as the combination worked well.

Bread and butter pudding was too tempting to resist and while enjoyable, I must say I prefer the rather more rustic version I produce at home to the perfect rectangular and rather moist offering available here.

Nothing wrong with it, but just not quite how I’m used to it.

Service here was very friendly and efficient and the whole atmosphere of this establishment is cosy and comfortable.

The final bill of £25.10, which also included hot chocolate, was reasonable all things considered.

I’ll certainly be calling in again.
