The Andover Advertiser learned yesterday of the decision to place all five fulltime members of staff on leave. The mayor has now issued a statement.
Mayor Cllr Richard Rowles said: "On Friday afternoon myself and our clerk made the decision to place members of staff in the Town Council office on leave following a number of concerns regarding councillors having been received. The town clerk was also subsequently placed on leave.
"The Town Council is taking steps to source a locum clerk and an Extraordinary General Meeting of the full council shall be called at the earliest opportunity.
"The Town Council shall of course be investigating the concerns raised by its staff and has, and continues to, receive legal advice in relation to these, and other matters, to ensure compliance and smooth running of the Council.
He concludes: "We all hope we can return the Town Council operations fully as soon as possible. In the meantime I trust the people of our town will support our team during this difficult time by respecting their privacy, and by allowing the Town Council to take the necessary steps to resolve the situation swiftly."
The Local Government Association (LGA) and town councillors contacted by the Advertiser delined to comment.
