In a recent survey conducted by Runner’s World magazine, it has been revealed that 60 per cent of women experience harassment while running, 25 per cent are subjected to sexist comments or unwanted sexual advances and six per cent fear for their lives.
The survey also revealed that 11 per cent of women had to stop running because of harassment.
The study comes just two months after the death of Sarah Everard, a 33-year woman who went missing while walking home in south London.
During the 10-year period from 2009 to 2018, as many as 272 young women aged 14 to 25 were killed in the UK, according to a recent report by the Guardian on Femicide Census. While figures show two women are killed a week by someone they know.
Among the recurring themes that mark these fatalities are stalking, coercive control, the impact of pornography, and some men’s inability to handle rejection.
