THE closure of the M3 southbound between junctions 8 and 9 this afternoon (May 21), is likely to last 'several hours', police have confirmed.
Emergency services are working on the scene after a collision between a motorbike and a lorry.
In a statement, Hampshire Constabulary said: "We’re currently dealing with a collision involving a motorbike and a lorry on the M3 southbound.
"As such, a closure is in place at junction 8 and is likely to remain in place for a few hours while emergency services work at the scene.
"We advise you to avoid this area as a result."
Police are also working to release motorists caught in the tailbacks and get them safely on their way.
They added: "We thank you for your patience while we deal with this incident."
Prior to the closure, traffic was building up, with one driver describing scenes of "chaos", with a lorry pulled over and debris in the road.
