If you’re looking for an opportunity to buy into the heart of Andover, then a former hotel may be just the ticket for you.
The former George Hotel is up for sale at just under £1 million in the town centre, including four commercial units on the ground floor and four flats above. The ex-pub is currently home to a range of businesses including Burgo’s Pet Shop, and is being sold as a fully tenanted property, with business not expected to be affected by the sale.
Estate agents Belvoir describe the property as “a great investment opportunity”, with the potential to have significant rental income from the units contained within it.
The George Hotel is believed to date back to at least 1586, and operated as an inn for many years until the 2010s, when it closed and lay empty for a time. The upper floors were at this point converted into flats, while the building’s then-owners, Faucet Inn Limited, converted the ground floor into mixed units uses following a 2018 application.
Concerns were raised at the time that the loss of the pub “would remove nearly 500 years of history,” from the heart of the town, but others argued it would “enhance the local economy”.
Richie and Danny Burgess subsequently opened their pet shop in one of these units in 2019, bringing a new business to the heart of Andover. They subsequently opened an aquatic extension on the other side of George Yard last year.
The current sale has the freehold of the whole site up for sale for a guide price of £950,000. This gets a buyer four ground floor retail units, as well as two one bedroom flats, a three bedroom flat and a four bedroom flat.
The same estate agents is also selling another central building, this time on the high street itself over the access to Union Street.
This building, which contains a barber’s shop as well as four flats, is on the market for slightly less than the George Hotel, at £900,000.
