LOCAL authority representatives for the Charlton area have sent messages of support to those affected by the devastating fire on Mercia Avenue in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, July 24).
Two properties sustained significant damage after lightning struck the street between 3.30 and 4am.
Speaking to the Advertiser, Jacqueline Smith, chair of Charlton Parish Council, said: "Our hearts go out to the residents involved, and I have already passed my telephone number, if in any, way, shape or form the Parish Council can help them."
Cllr Smith continued: "I believe especially in Mercia Avenue they have got that tight community and in Charlton itself we try and be a village community, and what happens to one person does affect other people.
"I have already had messages from other residents saying how can they help, but at the moment the residents involved have got mostly what they need."
"I think half the residents in Andover heard the big bang but were quite unaware of how it affected their local community."
Test Valley Borough Council representative for Charlton and the Pentons, Cllr Linda Lashbrook, added: "I have been to see the residents and have a look. I give them all my best wishes and really feel for them, but our close community is some comfort."
Meanwhile, MP Kit Malthouse said: "Very alarming to see this and obviously a devastating lightning strike for the residents. I send my best wishes to all affected and thanks to the emergency services."
