In MY previous column on the eve of COP26, I wrote about what Test Valley Borough Council is doing to help boost biodiversity and counter climate change. So, it was great to walk the walk this week and help local school children plant trees. I’ve been taking part in planting fortnight at Harmony Woods for many years now but it was extra special to be able to bring my daughter this time. Especially as this is the tenth and final year of tree planting on this site between Augusta Park and Enham Alamein. A huge thank you to Wendy and the whole team at Andover Trees United for all they’ve done in creating and maintaining this amazing landscape - and engaging with our young people along the way. They will, of course, continue to plant trees in our town and we’re in discussion with them about helping on new sites. The new field study area will also ensure that our children continue to learn about the importance of nature right at the heart of Harmony Woods.
Talking of precious landscapes, I’m delighted that Rooksbury Mill has been awarded the coveted Green Flag Award for 2021. In the age of more and more computer screens, taking a break and enjoying a change of scenery, even if it’s a simple walk through the park is such an important part of our wellbeing. That is why the council prioritises time and funds to ensure that our nature reserves and open spaces are carefully maintained for residents to enjoy.
It was great to attend the Christmas festivities in Andover on Sunday – and my thanks go to the Town Council for the beautiful Christmas tree and lights. The feedback I got from local retailers is that they had more money through their tills on Sunday than they did on Saturday. Events really do work – and Test Valley is working with the BID to put on a comprehensive programme of events throughout 2022. On that note, tomorrow is Small Business Saturday and although it’s important we support our fantastic independent businesses all year round, at this time of year especially, I hope you’ll join me in sending some extra trade their way. Finally, I’d like to wish all readers a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
