THE first phase of the new Augusta Park to Smannell pathway is nearly complete.

As previously reported, the new pathway has been designed to enable Augusta Park residents to safely walk to the pub, church and school in Smannell - making the village facilities more sustainable - whilst also giving better access to the new facilitates in Augusta Park for those that live in the village.

The joint Test Valley Borough Council and Hampshire County Council project resurfaced and widened the existing cross field footpaths. Following consultations, this solution has been supported by the Augusta Park Community Association, Smannell Parish Council, Andover Trees United and local landowners.

The next step will be the removal of the existing wooden surrounds on the deer fences, and replacement with wider metal ones, which will give easier access for pushchairs and mobility scooters. This installation is due to take place within the next couple of weeks, but there has been a short delay in obtaining materials.

Posting to Facebook, TVBC leader and Bourne Valley representative, Cllr Phil North, said: "Those that have lived in the area for a while will know that this has been a long time coming, but I’m delighted our hard-work has finally paid off.

"More details on timings for phase two (the section between Woodhouse and Smannell Road) will be made available soon. But you can now walk from the Augusta Park Sports Pavilion to Woodhouse and then straight out onto Malthouse Lane all on durable footways."
