A SPECIAL event for the victims of last year's double train crash and the emergency services who attended is being organised in Salisbury.

Held by Mayor of Salisbury Cllr Caroline Corbin, the 'thank you' event will be held at the Guildhall on Thursday April 21.

Passengers and members of the emergency services who were affected by the incident are invited to attend at 2pm.

The South Western Railway (SWR) service was travelling between Andover and Salisbury on October 31 last year when it collided with a train from Great Western Railway (GWR) just outside Fisherton Tunnel.

Both trains, carrying around 200 passengers, derailed and slid into the tunnel.

The driver of the SWR service, 74-year-old Robin Tandy, suffered life-changing injuries after getting trapped in the cab. He was released by firefighters.

Leaf mulch on the tracks is believed to have caused the double crash, though a formal investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is underway.

Its preliminary report, published in February, revealed special trains due to clear the tracks had been delayed that day.
