AHEAD of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the black cast iron lamppost erected in front of the Guildhall will be refurbished.
In 1887, to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, the column was commissioned and placed in Andover High Street.
Ninety years later it was refurbished and brought back into use to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Phil North said: “Forty-five summers have passed since then and it’s looking a bit worse for wear. So ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, I thought it was the ideal time to refurbish it once again. During the next month it will be stripped back, cleaned and repainted. Complementing the work we’ve just completed, renovating the Guildhall stonework.
“A huge thanks to former Mayor of Test Valley, Chris Lynn for sharing the historical photos with me. His father George Lynn is one of the names on the plaque associated with the 1977 refurbishment.”
