A GROUP of students from Andover the huge success of a film festival that took place last week.
Level 3 Digital Content Creation students from Andover Campus organised the ‘Homebrew Film Festival’ at the Andover Odeon on May 22.
The event received close to 100 submissions from filmmakers across the UK, catching the attention of Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s popular national podcast, Kermode and Mayo’s Take.
The students spent over 350 hours of industry placement to develop the event by putting great consideration into branding, funding-raising and all-important outreach to the local and wider filmmaking community to raise the necessary funds and sponsorship to support the festival.
The event turned out to be a true credit to the students’ commitment and planning culminated in an entertaining evening supported by college staff, fellow students, and the paying public, who enjoyed a variety of short films.
Peter Hearn, lecturer on the digital content creation course, said: “This will hopefully be something the students will remember for years to come. For a group of 17-18-year-old students, to put on a festival like this shows a great determination to get things done. It was lovely to see how much the students matured between year 1 and year 2, and a lot of this was down to this project and the final event itself. I’m proud of them.”
The Homebrew team were able to apply their knowledge directly to the industry, developing vital communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills whilst being able to put their career choices to the test prior to leaving the college to embark on their next steps.
Ashley Wassell, work placement liaison officer, said: “This is what an industry placement is all about: bringing students and employers together to engage with a vibrant, creative project and produce an exciting film festival outcome that develops students' skills and meets the needs of customers and business alike.”
