A once-in-a-lifetime event has drawn to a close, after people across the country came together in street parties and community events to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 70 year reign as monarch.
Residents in Andover have made a tremendous effort over the past four days. Our reporters and photographers have been out and about speaking to many revelers, and have put together this gallery of images, with more to come in this week’s print edition (out Friday).
Highlights have included InAndover’s Jubilee Street Party on the High Street, a village picnic in Overton, Saxon Fields and Vigo Park picnics, and wonderful street parties such as those in Farrs Avenue, Mercia Avenue and Old Winton Road.
“Even if you were born today, you will never see 70 years again!” said Carolyn Troman, at Bridge Street in Overton. “It’s unique.”
John James Harris, 77, originally from Kingsclere, added: “I remember my mum telling me that the Queen’s coronation was on and us all sitting round the wireless as a family listening to it. We didn’t think we would live to be 70 in those days!”
At Old Winton Road, event organisers Sue Lobb and Silvie Ballard invited all 300 households. Sue said: “Nobody will ever see this again, everyone thought it was a really good idea because we haven’t seen each other in so long.”
In Mercia Avenue, Charlton, neighbours have held an annual event since the 2002 jubilee, but it was particularly special this year following a devastating summer for the street in 2021, as two houses were destroyed in a lightning strike fire.
Meanwhile, at Farrs Avenue, organiser Jan Bullock said: “We are a close community on this road. You can’t let 70 years of the Queen pass without doing something.”
