Now that the Prime Minister has won the confidence vote, I hope we can come together, and get on with solving the important issues facing us such as keeping our streets safe, standing up to Putin, growing our economy and tackling the cost of living.
I recently wrote for the Andover Advertiser’s Cost of Living campaign, and I had mentioned that more measures would be on the way. My Cabinet colleagues and I have been working up plans that will make a real difference for people, and I wanted to explain the specific action we are taking.
I know that people living in Andover are concerned about the high inflation we are facing globally. My Cabinet colleagues and I have been working up plans that will make a real difference for people, and I wanted to explain the specific action we are taking.
Every household will get a £400 discount on their energy bills, and this no longer needs to be paid back. Eight million of the lowest income families will receive a one-off payment of £650, this will be paid directly into bank accounts in two lump sums this year. Pensioner households will get a separate £300, and people living with disabilities will get £150.
All this adds up to a £15 million package of further support to address the cost of living. Most of it is targeted at vulnerable families, and we’re funding some of it through a properly thought-out profits levy on energy firms — which crucially gives them tax relief on the investment they make into the UK.
This latest round of measures is on top of the billions committed in extra funding for vulnerable people through local authorities, council tax rebates, freezing the license fee, cutting fuel and even alcohol duty, and increasing the national living wage.
No government can solve every problem; our focus is to grow the economy, create good jobs, and help those who are struggling in a targeted, meaningful and sustainable way.
Please make sure you are claiming the help that you may be eligible for, such as the warm homes discount, winter fuel payments and free childcare. More at: https://costoflivingsupport.campaign.gov.uk/?utm_campaign=No.11%20Newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter
