SOCIAL club which has recently shut down donates last of funds to hospice.
The Countess of Brecknock’s Hospice Trust received £642.31 from the Andover Homemakers Club, which has recently shut down.
The donation took place on Friday, June 10, with a check handover ceremony taking place in the hospice's garden.
The handover was attended by club chairman Jacky Hutchins and treasurer Mary Hazard.
Jacky said that the handover was "a lovely afternoon".
Founded in 1930, the Andover Homemakers Club had many members throughout its long existence, at one point boasting almost 100 members.
The club members were planning to hold a celebration tea party to celebrate its 90th anniversary in May 2020.
However, the group’s plans were dashed by the pandemic, and it was decided in 2021 that, because of the difficulties of covid and with a gradually aging and dwindling membership, the club’s existence would come to an end.
Jacky explained: “It was getting a bit much for all of us really.
“So, when we couldn’t meet anymore and couldn’t communicate very easily, it was very difficult and a lot of people said ‘well, I don’t know if it’s worth going on’.
“In the end we took a vote, and most of us said ‘well, I think we just let it fold and give the money to charity.”
The club met for one last lunch at The Willow, where members of the committee were presented with flowers and the group decided where the last of their funds would be donated to.
Jacky said that the decision to donate it to the hospice was an easy one, saying: “We have collected money for them before.

“I think it came down to either the hospice or Macmillan Cancer Support.
“And we thought ‘well, we might end up here one day’!”
She continued: “I’m glad that our going will help the hospice.
“I would just like to thank all the members for their support over the years.”
Located in Andover, The Countess of Brecknock Hospice provides end of life care to adults suffering from life limiting illnesses in the surrounding area, as well as comfort and support for their friends, families and carers.
