A LIVERY yard in Stockbridge is participating in a nationwide event to raise awareness of how to safely pass horses on the road.

Tiebridge Livery is taking part in the Pass Wide and Slow ride on September 18.

The event will see a group of horse riders ride out from Tiebridge Livery at 11am to Stockbridge, before circling round at Longstock and heading back to the livery yard.

The ride has been organised by livery yard manager Sarah Moulton.

“It looks to be a good event.”

Pass Wide and Slow was started by Diane Ford in 2015 with the aim of informing the public about the dangers of passing horses and cyclists on the road.

The group is campaigning to raise awareness of the proper ways that vehicles should pass horse riders on the road, leaving a gap of two metres and at speeds of less than 10mph.

Sarah said: “For instance, our village, from Stockbridge going into Houghton, is a 30mph, then goes to a 60, then goes to 40 and then a 30, and riding into Stockbridge, it’s a really nice ride round, but people pass you so fast.

“And it doesn’t matter how much hi-vis you’ve got on; they just don’t seem to realise that there could be horses or cyclists or people walking their dog.

“It’s a huge safety concern.”

Sarah continued: “It’s quite a big thing, and it’s just to raise awareness.

“We thought it would be a nice thing to do, just to help out the cause."

Sarah said that anyone who wants to support the Pass Wide and Slow are more than welcome to participate in the event, saying: “Anybody on foot with a dog, or cyclists, anyone can join us.

“The more people who join us the further we’ll go.”
