SCORES of shoppers across Hampshire were left baffled after Tesco cancelled all its home deliveries after 1pm on Friday due to a nationwide technical glitch.
People awaiting their weekly shop received a last minute email from the supermarket giant to say it would no longer be arriving.
One Winchester customer took to social media to describe her "shock" after opening the disappointing notification, while another said they had booked in for a slot with competitor Sainsbury's instead.
Many insisted they hadn't even been informed of the cancellations while venting their rage on Twitter. One customer, Anna Cole, said: "Disgraceful Tesco. All orders cancelled for delivery from 1pm. Totally understand ‘system issues’ can’t be helped, but how you deal with it can! Leaving your customers hanging with no communication, no offer to reschedule or any offer to say ‘sorry’ is shocking!"
A spokesperson for Tesco said that “due to a technical issue, we have had to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery”.
They added: “We’re really sorry for any inconvenience caused. Customers who are impacted can use our app or website to rebook at a time convenient to them.”
Tesco delivers in the region of a million online orders every week, meaning thousands of customers could have been affected by the issue on Friday afternoon.
Supermarket chiefs said that all affected customers would receive an email to notify them of the delay. Tesco advised people to use its app or website to place a new order and view all available delivery slots, although it is currently unclear whether the blip will have caused significant backlogs for drivers.
It added that orders scheduled for Saturday will not be impacted.
