A SOLICITORS has expressed fears hundreds of drivers could be endangering road users or pedestrians because they do not understand the Highway Code.
Dashcam experts Nextbase found that out of 2,000 surveyed drivers, 70 per cent did not understand the latest driving rules introduced in January 2022.
Churchers Solicitors criminal defence team worker, Sarah Hallet, has warned motorists that misunderstanding or not being aware of the new rules is not a defence in court, should they be involved in a car accident.
The changes prioritise the most vulnerable and give a greater responsibility to heavier or quicker motorists to decrease the risk of motor accidents.

Sarah said: “We are urging people to acknowledge the changes to the Highway Code and to understand them. It is very concerning that out of the surveyed motorists, 70 per cent of people did not understand the changes.
“The changes have been put in place to protect the most vulnerable. Those who ignore or fail to acknowledge them could face serious consequences if they’re involved in a collision.
“If a motorist was responsible for an accident and said they were not aware or did understand the changes, this could not act as a defence in court and they could still face driving penalties.”
As part of the government’s THINK! Campaign Churchers Solicitors is raising awareness of the changes and motorists’ responsibilities.
