The Liberal Democrats have elected a new leader for their group on Test Valley Borough Council.
Neil Gwynne, councillor for Cupernham ward in Romsey, becomes the leader of the 12-strong opposition group, vowing to replace “hot air with real action" to tackle the climate emergency in Test Valley.
Cllr Gwynne takes over the leadership from Cllr Celia Dowden with exactly six months to go until the next council elections.
He said: "It would be a huge privilege to take on this role at any time but to do so in the run-up to such an important election is particularly so. I have a tough act to follow as Cllr Dowden has done an outstanding job."
Cllr Dowden paid tribute to her team. She said: “It has been my privilege to have led the Liberal Democrat group of councillors at Test Valley Borough Council for the last five years.
"Their work ethic and dedication to serve the residents of TVBC are second to none. I am delighted to hand over to Cllr Neil Gwynne, who I know will champion the Liberal Democrat values and lead the group to success.”
In order to focus on the role, Cllr Gwynne has also resigned from his previous post as Climate Champion Member for TVBC.
"I welcomed the apparent opportunity to influence TVBC policy and actions and chaired the panel overseeing the council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan," he added.
"However, very few of the panel’s recommendations are being actioned and a motion seeking greener building regulations has had all measurable targets removed."
Despite holding significant reserves, Cllr Gwynne also says the council has chosen not to support the Lib Dem proposal of setting aside £1m for climate change actions.
