MPs are bombarded with more than 3,000 offensive tweets every day, according to a recent investigation.
According to the research, covering six weeks between March and April this year, one in every 20 tweets sent to MPs was deemed to be ‘toxic’.
Figures provided to the Advertiser by the BBC’s Shared Data Unit revealed the number of toxic tweets sent to Hampshire MPs in and around Andover.
Female MPs were marginally more likely to receive abuse including terms such as “thick” and “ignorant”.

And, to be subjected to sexualised language.
Meanwhile, their male counterparts were more likely to be called “liars”.
Conservative MP Caroline Nokes, the member for Romsey and Southampton North, received the most abuse during the investigation's remit with 42 toxic tweets.
In response, Ms Nokes said: “I turn off notifications and simply don't look.
“The pity of that is that those who send abuse mean that I can never have any sort of meaningful exchange with anyone on social media.
“The block and mute buttons are frequently deployed.”
One user sent 128 toxic-rated tweets to male MPs and 85 to female MPs during the time period.
Conservative MP for North West Hampshire Kit Malthouse received a shocking 254 toxic tweets. He was asked for a comment but did not respond.
The investigation found that Conservative MPs were nearly twice as likely as a Labour MP to receive a tweet classed as severely toxic.

North Wiltshire MP James Gray, whose consistency covers Tidworth, received no toxic tweets. He confirmed to the Advertiser that he is glad that he has not seen such abusive tweets because he does not use the social media platform.
All 20 of the MPs to receive the most abuse proportionally were not members of the cabinet or shadow cabinet.
The words "stupid" and "pathetic" were the two most commonly used adjectives in the tweets analysed during the investigation.
