WALKERS have celebrated the opening of a new footbridge across the River Test marking the completion of a walking route.
The previous structure had to be replaced, which meant since April 2021 walkers were unable to cross the river between Whitchurch and Tufton.
The county council’s executive member for countryside and regulatory services, Cllr Russell Oppenheimer, joined local residents and the MP for North West Hampshire Kit Malthouse to officially open the new crossing.

Cllr Oppenheimer said: “I am delighted that residents of Tufton, Hurstbourne Priors, and Whitchurch can once again cross the River Test at this point following the replacement of a footbridge. The attractive new bridge will enable people to walk, wheel or run their way across the river while enjoying stunning views in an area that is rich in wildlife. I’d like to thank all the local residents and community groups who have supported this project which has been complex due to the ecologically sensitive nature of the site.
“This is one of around 3,000 footbridges in Hampshire that the county council’s countryside service look after. Each of these crossings, from the smallest to the largest, help us to provide access to our beautiful countryside and the landscapes of Hampshire.”
Recently Whitchurch walking group’s Wednesday Walks visited the new footbridge.
Walks organisers said: “The footbridge at Tufton is a key part of many of Whitchurch’s most beautiful walks and has been sorely missed by ramblers, dog walkers and anyone who loves a stroll in our local countryside.
“Our Wednesday Walks group is delighted to see it reopened and enhanced. The new bridge is clad in wood, with handrails on both sides and gentler access from the riverbanks, making it easier for our less-able walkers to use.”

The new wooden 22-metre bridge is in the parish of Hurstbourne Priors and creates a link and circular path using Rights of Way, footpaths and road network between the communities of Hurstbourne Priors, Tufton and Whitchurch. The route winds through a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a rare chalk river habitat, which is home to species such as water-crowfoot, several hundred different types of water invertebrates, and otters. This meant the new structure had to receive approval from Natural England and the Environment Agency before it could be built.
Mr Malthouse said: “This charming new bridge is a real tribute to the collaboration between the local community and Hampshire County Council to solve a problem and enhance the beautiful river. Bravo to Hampshire Countryside Services and the local community for producing something to delight everyone who loves the River Test for generations to come.”
