A VILLAGE postmistress has thanked locals for their continued support after receiving a New Year’s Honour recognition for providing services to her community.

Leslie Francis, 63, is sub-postmaster for Enham Alamein Post Office and said the award wouldn't have been possible without the 'fantastic' community in the village. 

Leslie received the British Empire Medal from the Lord Lieutenant's Office, which is based in Winchester on March 20. She is one of the first to be honoured in Hampshire since King Charles acceded to the throne.

Leslie and her husband, Tim, took on the village store and Post Office in Enham Alamein over 18 years ago after moving from Shirley in Southampton to the close-knit village.

Leslie said: "I cannot tell you how proud I feel to have received this award. We had an amazing day going to Winchester, where we met the Lord Lieutenant. We were looked after amazingly and I feel privileged we were able to take part in such a unique experience."

"These are the first medals to be given under King Charles reign in Hampshire, which is an amazing accolade and one I will be able to share with my family for years to come."

Leslie said the honour wouldn't have been possible without the 'fantastic' community surrounding the post office.

She continued: "The post office is the hub of our community, and we do more than just serve. There have been many changes over the last 18 years, but the people in Enham have remained fantastic, and we are dedicated to supporting and working for them. 

"This award wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for our community, so this medal is testament to them. I'm so proud to accept the award for my family and residents past and present in Enham. It’s a precious place to live and work."
