AN early 19th Century hunting lodge, owned by the Rolfe family since 2003, is now on the market for £3.65m.

The Grade II listed Penton Lodge was built by William Cubitt of Cubitt Estates Ltd, a builder who built Covent Garden, Pimlico, Belgravia and Cubitt Town on the Isle of Dogs in London and served as MP for Andover from 1847 until his death in 1863, broken by a brief tenure as lord mayor of London from 1860-1862.

Danielle and Guy Rolfe moved into the house from London in 2010. Guy's parents, Douglas and Vivienne, had already owned the property since 2003 and a large amount of repair work was performed.

Danielle explained during an interview with Great British Life in 2012: “A year and a half ago we lived in a sieve. We had a total of about 150 buckets everywhere - we used everything from tin cans to foil dishes from takeaways to catch the rain.”

Since then, the state of the house has greatly improved. By 2011, the house was in a good enough condition for the Rolfes to host their own wedding there.

In 2012, the Rolfes turned the ground floor of the three-floor, 17-bedroom house into a daycare centre for adults with disabilities named James’s Place, after Guy’s brother James who suffers from epilepsy.

Danielle told The Times that James’s Place is not closing, but will be relocating to another historic building nearby.

She said: “We’re not closing the business, we’re moving it. My husband and I have been offered an amazing opportunity to bring back to life a 300-year-old village primary school a mile-and-a-half away. For James’s Place it represents a much better space. We feel that it’s time for the next custodians to come along. We love bringing buildings back to life.”

According to Savills, the property offers more than 17,000 square feet of accommodation, along with a two-bedroom lodge house on the grounds.
