AN ANDOVER gin specialist has created a unique flavoured gin to send to the King to celebrate the Coronation.

Kate Griffin, who runs Wessex Spirits and the Gin Palace in Winchester Street, Andover, teamed up with two other Hampshire businesses to create the gin, based on the King’s preferred breakfast drink of Darjeeling tea with honey.

She created the Royal buzz by working with Picket Twenty-based beekeeping supplies business Becky’s Beezzzs and Winchester-based fine tea specialist Char Teas to craft the honey and tea-flavoured spirit fit for a King.

Previously, Kate launched a competition to find a Royal recipe ready for the Coronation of King Charles.

The winning suggestion was inspired by reports that the King enjoys a cup of Darjeeling tea with honey every morning.

Now the gin, in its distinctive gold bottle, is being sent to Buckingham Palace and Kate hopes the King and his Queen Consort, Camilla, might enjoy a tipple over the Bank Holiday in their honour.

Kate said: “I’ve created some very unusual flavours before, including a Hot Cross Bun gin for Easter and a hibiscus and summer fruits Summer Solstice gin. When it came to the Royal celebrations I wanted to create something that was inspired by the King’s own tastes – and the tea and honey combination works so well that it was a worthy winner.

“It was an added bonus to be able to work with other local businesses to create the gin – now I just hope it gets the Royal Seal of approval.”

The winning suggestion came from Hampshire PR agency Polymedia’s director Graeme Patfield.

He said: “We’re used to creating all kinds of inventive campaigns, but a gin is a first. We’re delighted that Kate loved our suggestion – and can confirm first-hand that the gin is delicious.”

Kate, a former teacher, creates bespoke flavoured gins to order for local businesses, individuals and corporate customers as well as holding gin tastings and events at the Gin Palace, site of the former Lamb Inn, which she shares with craft beer brewer The Andover Tap.

She is planning a Coronation Celebration at the Gin Palace on May 6, from 11am to 10.30pm.

Coronation Gin is a strictly limited edition and is available for order while stocks last. For more information see wessexspirits.co.uk.
