AN ANDOVER author is excited after writing a new book detailing the musical history of the town, all the way from the 1800s to the present day.

Pete Staples was initially asked by the Andover History and Archaeology Society to write an article about The Troggs playing at the Copper Kettle.

However, Pete realised this was only part of a rich musical history stemming from the town in that era, and decided to write a small booklet about all the venues and groups from that period.

When he appealed on social media for more information from the community, Pete was asked why he only was focusing on the 60s, and before long, had increased the booklet to include more generations of music.

Pete decided to take on the task of compiling a book about the music in Andover, stemming back to the late 1800s to the present day. From the idea of a small booklet, 18 months later, Pete ended up with a completed book on the musical history of Andover.

All genres of music are covered in the book, including Andover Musical Theatre Company, Andover Choral Society, The Harmonium Singers, Andover Museum Loft Singers and most pop groups and bands from the fifties until the present day.

Pete said: “I think having completed the book there is a sense of relief and excitement to have encountered so many Andover musicians. It’s been a lot of work but also a lot of pleasure.

"The enthusiasm and generosity of all that have contributed with their stories about their life in Andover and their musical experiences make me happy to know that I have captured and recorded their stories for them and future generations.

"I would like to thank everybody that has contributed, especially my friend John Walker who has helped out with his knowledge and memories of the sixties and taking over a lot of the drudge, and also my wife Hilary, for all her help."

The launch is in the Andover Salvation Army Hall in Andover from 11am – 2pm. on May 27.
