AN ANDOVER conservation charity is appealing for volunteers to aid in the creation of a new feature in Harmony Woods.

Andover Trees United are creating a dragon garden concept in memory of Sandy Burnfield, a friend of Andover Trees United and its members.

Dan Lobb, a charity trustee and a renowned landscape designer, has designed the garden to be a synergy between the local legend of the Wherwell Cockatrice and Native American Mounds.

The area will be for the use of Andover Trees United volunteers, and hireable by organisations and private groups.

The charity is using the project as an opportunity to welcome new volunteers to the wood. This new project will allow ATU to grow its volunteer base and create something that is solely for its benefit.

The organisation is looking for as many volunteers as possible, old and new, to support the creation of this commemorative garden.

The first part of the creation took place on Saturday, July 29, when the area was scraped and moved about

Part two of the project will take place from August 12 to August 18, during which the dragon will begin to take shape, with helping hands needed to smooth the mounds, something all the family can get involved in.

The wildflower planting and celebration day, which will take place in October, will complete the garden. Wildflowers will be planted on the sculpted mounds, and music and storytelling will be incorporated.

Amanda Kane-Smith, author of Test Valley Tales which includes a story about the Wherwell Cockatrice and the wildflowers of Harmony Woods, will be the storyteller for the day.
