PLANS to build 25 homes in Picket Piece have sparked objections from residents concerned about overdevelopment of the village and problems with the roads.

Mr and Mrs A Dale have submitted an application to Test Valley Borough Council for a development on land north of Walworth Road.

The applicants say the scheme includes a “wide opportunity for home ownership, including a range of affordable housing, a generous area of public open space and financial contributions towards improving services and infrastructure”.

The application site is approximately 1.20 hectares and is a currently undeveloped field.

Mr and Mrs Dale were previously granted outline permission for up to 30 homes in March 2019, and last year they submitted a reserved matters application but this was later withdrawn due to a number of concerns by council planners, including the quality of the layout and appearance of the proposed development, a net loss of biodiversity and car parking, to name just a few.

The current application is said to have “sought to address these previous concerns”.

A planning document states: “The new dwellings will be of an interesting form and make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the area.

“The proposed dwellings will each have good sized garden areas, with plenty of useable amenity space for the future occupiers.

“The site will be accessed from Walworth Road to the south, whilst internally it is proposed to link into the two adjacent sites to the north east and south west, which also form part of the strategic allocation.”

The plans have drawn criticism from residents who have written objections to the council.

Tom Monkhouse, of Mulberry Road, said: “As someone that has bought into a new build estate, I know it's important to continue developing the community however it's disappointing to see yet another planning application for Picket Piece without any consideration for the amenities necessary for the residents of an ever-growing village.”

Rose Green, of Walworth Road, wrote: “As long-standing members of Picket Piece we have gone from a country village with hardly any traffic to a constant stream of traffic going past our door. There has been a lot of developments happening over the last 10 years all with increased traffic associated with them.

“There will also be the increased traffic if or when the bridge by Finkley is opened up, with people going through the village to get to the A34. It will become a dangerous rat run.”

Others also expressed concern about a proposed link between the development and the Hawthorn Rise estate.
