The town council has agreed to renew the water supply at one of its allotments.

The matter was discussed at an Andover Town Council meeting on Wednesday, October 18, after it had originally been brought before the council by Cllr Ted Reynolds on Wednesday, September 20.

The council became aware of an issue at The Drove Allotment site after receiving a high water bill.

It took a meter reading on Monday, September 11 which showed "a considerable amount" of water was leaking at the site and being continuously used while no tenants were there. 

Subsequent readings were taken to try and ascertain how much water was being lost, which showed "significant usage", resulting in the council deciding to turn off the water supply to stop the wastage while it investigated. 

A number of quotations to replace the water supply at the allotment were sourced by the town clerk, who recommended a quotation of £9,440 (Option B) as opposed to an alternative quote of just over £18,000 (Option A).

Cllr Katherine Bird said: "On the basis the town clerk has recommended option B, which would lead me to believe there is no reason that there is such a difference in the price, other than the company and their costing structures.

"On the basis that the town clerk has seen all the necessary information and spoken with these companies, if your recommendation is to go with the lower-cost quote then that sounds best to me."

The town clerk added that both the companies are reputable and would be checked for insurance and public liability, and all safety aspects of the works covered before a contract is drawn out.

Cllr Bird added: "Based on this information, rather than just blindly going for a lower value, that is why I have proposed that we accept the recommendation to accept option B."

Plans to advance with Option B were proposed by Cllr Bird and seconded by Cllr Sangster, with seven votes in favour of accepting the proposal with one abstention.
