THE annual Alan Potter Golf Day was held this year for the 15th time, to continue raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK.

The event, which took place at The High Post Golf Club on Thursday, August 3, was run in memory of Alan Potter, who sadly died from the disease in October 2005.

The day raised £10,000 bringing the total raised over the past 17 years to a whopping £168,000. Two golf days had to be cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

A total of 20 teams played on the day which was in the usual format of a Texas Scramble. The day began with golfers teeing off on a slightly overcast but dry day.

Texas Scramble is a form of team competition in golf. All members of the team, which is normally made up of three or four players, tee off. After all have teed off, the team decides which drive is the best.

From there, all members of the team place their golf balls where the chosen drive ended up, with all members playing a second shot from this spot.

From these second shots, one is chosen and all play a third shot from there, and so on until the ball is holed. Each team returns one score for each hole and the team with the lowest score for the round wins.

The golf was then followed by a buffet, raffle and a sealed bid auction with comedian Adger Brown as master of ceremony.

The winning team was announced as Fore from Hockley, who picked up the trophy. The team will be entered into the prostate cancer golf championships, where they will compete with other winning teams from various charity golf days.

The golf day is run by Alan’s son Simon Potter, along with Chris Bradbury and Neil Wells.

Simon said: "We really appreciate all the sponsors who get behind the day, and all of those who take part to enable the event to raise both funds and awareness for prostate cancer.

"Obviously raising money is fantastic, but getting the message out there is so important and could be the difference in saving someone's life."
