WORK has started to help manage the flood risk surrounding Andover after Hampshire experienced a high level of flood warnings and alerts.

Andover's MP Kit Malthouse, councillors, Southern Water and the Environment Agency have come together to monitor and help manage the flood risk in Hampshire.

Mr Malthouse said he is "deeply concerned about residents in Vernham Dean, St Mary Bourne and the wider Bourne Valley" who are reporting rising groundwater.

He said: "We are also keeping an eye on the other 'Bourne' that runs through Shipton Bellinger in the west of the constituency and the villages around Weyhill and Thruxton.

"I have been in close touch with local councillors, as well as Southern Water and the Environment Agency — who are all working together to manage the risk of flooding."

He said the Environment Agency has deployed a temporary barrier in St Mary Bourne, while Southern Water has restarted 24/7 pumping in parts of the valley.

Mr Malthouse continued: "Hampshire County Council have undertaken a programme of drainage cleaning over the past six weeks, including gullies and catch pits across the constituency. 

"Of course, the Government has an important role to play in flood prevention, and we are investing £5.2bn into our national flood programme, which is paying for thousands of new flood defences, sustainable drainage systems, and nature-based water storage solutions — all which will better protect properties across the country. 

"Thankfully the dry weather over the last few days has led to a slowing in the rise of groundwater, but the situation remains volatile.”

Residents are advised to keep an eye on gov.uk for the latest alerts and warnings.

If there is a flood warning residents are advised to remove any valuables from cellars and have pumps to help reduce water levels.
