As the Andover BID manager and a proud resident of Andover, I find myself increasingly disheartened to see so much negativity taking the spotlight online. With more people moving into the area and feeling positive about their connection with the town, surely it is time to harness that and look forward to the future at a time when we have so many exciting things coming to our town centre.
Let's consider this: like many other towns, Andover has faced its fair share of challenges, especially with the changes in retail. We all want more shops, right? I understand that. However, we should remember that constant negativity can discourage new businesses from considering Andover, and it most certainly discourages local residents into town to shop. Imagine being a budding business owner and coming across a lot of complaints online. That wouldn't exactly create the warm welcome one would hope for, right?
Look beyond the shop fronts, Andover is bustling with fantastic organisations that are doing incredible things. Local charities and community projects are bringing life to once empty units. Andover has a fabulously rich cultural music and arts scene with a lot of incredible creative talent – all of this encourages a diverse hub of positive activity!
And let's not forget about the events in our town centre. Different groups are coming together to bring the community closer and showcase the vibrant spirit of Andover. The variety of Andover markets will be expanding this year, with many amazing stalls waiting for new businesses to join in. At events the direct feedback we get from members of the community is that they love coming into town when something is going on and they are often surprised at how many businesses there are taking part in our trails. They’d heard from Facebook that there was ‘nothing in town’ and yet when they do come into town they often find hidden gems that they hadn't discovered before.
Contrary to what some might say, Andover is thriving. It's time to shift the narrative away from what we lack and focus on what makes Andover so special - a community that actively shapes the lively scene of our town.
