The WEOS concert programme for 2024 got off to an excellent start, thanks to the experienced Rod Pooley from Bexhill-on-Sea.
Despite his limited sight, he provided a wide selection of music and styles to suit all tastes, including several songs that were new to the club. Equally satisfying was the fact that Rod seemed to enjoy the evening just as much as the audience.
Rod developed his skills after taking up the piano at the age of 10 when he was taught by a top London jazz pianist. Consequently, he became a very fluent jazz player, although his concerts contain a vast range of genres to cater for all musical tastes.
He attended a school which had one of the largest music departments in the UK, with three full orchestras. He performed solo in concert at the school in front of former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, who was the Bexley MP at that time.
The first half of the show featured songs from Glen Campbell to Pavarotti, from Elton John to Strictly Come Dancing, plus music from the cinema and theatre worlds.

After the interval, the variation continued, with music from The Beatles, The Carpenters and Queen – plus a little Country style and a hint of Jazz, whilst the concert concluded with Ravel and a Rock ’n’ Roll number!
The proverb says 'Variety's the very spice of life’ but on this particular evening, the music certainly added a special flavour.
The club’s next concert is on Thursday, February 15 and further information can be found on the club’s website, weyhill-eos.co.uk.
