ANDOVER will once again be filled with weird and wonderful go-karts as the popular soapbox derby is returning, with a ‘bit more danger’.

The Andover Soapbox Derby is back on Sunday, June 2, and will be bigger than ever with more teams involved.

The derby, which is organised by Andover Community Events, will see teams take on a 400-metre course, with a crowd of more than 3,000 people expected to be watching on in awe.

One of the organisers Kevin Rush said: “We wanted a little bit of danger in there somewhere, so this year we have more curves and twists – it is a challenging course.”

This year’s event has more sponsors, with many Andover businesses getting involved, including Cooper Foods, Aldridge Vehicle Services, Nidge's Artisan Pizza Kitchen, The Travelling Cupcake, The Commercial Centre, VP-AV Sound Advice, Sparkles and Purbeck Civil Engineering.

KJM Windows and Conservatives and The Aesthetic Doctor, who are gold sponsors, will be assisting with judging on the day and will have an obstacle named after each of them.

Championing the sponsors, a post on the event’s Facebook page said: “It is because of their generosity that Soapbox is free to attend and any penny collected can go to our chosen charity of Andover Foodbank.

“Now all we need our teams, so, stop thinking about it and come join the challenge that is Andover Soapbox Derby.”

Beyond the thrill of the races, there will also be music from the indie-folk band, Show Ponies, to entertain the crowd. Traders will also have stalls at the event for spectators to browse.

Once again, the popular event will raise money for charity and this year’s good cause is Andover Foodbank.
