A MAN who died in a hotel room at Sutton Scotney services died from natural causes, an inquest heard. 

Michael Button, 36, of Picket Twenty Way, was staying at the Days Inn, a hotel at Sutton Scotney Services, on the A34, in March last year when he died.

An inquest, held at Winchester Coroners’ Court on Monday, May 13, heard that Mr Button had died of a heart arrhythmia - an abnormality of the heart's rhythm.

In a written statement, consultant pathologist Dr Adnan Al-Badri, who conducted a post-mortem, said he believed traces of alcohol and prescription medication found in Mr Button's blood would have contributed to the condition, which was he described the primary cause of death.

Mr Button’s mother, Tina Christie, who found her son in the room around midday on March 7, paid tribute to her son before the coroner. 

She said: “He would always put people before himself, like his family or his friends."

She told the inquest that the day before he died, Mr Button had called her to say he loved her. 

Area coroner Jason Pegg ruled Mr Button died of natural causes, dying sometime overnight on March 6 into March 7. 

He said: “He was a considerate man and put others before him. It seems to be that it was a natural event. For whatever reason, Michael had a problem with his heart and he passed in that room in March 2023.

“He had sat down and was eating a McDonald’s meal – there was no evidence that he had meant to end his life.”

Ending the inquest, Mr Pegg gave his condolences to the family.
