Ludgershall commemorates 80th anniversary of D-Day

On Thursday, June 6, Ludgershall Town Council hoisted the D-Day flag, along with the rest of the nation, later a beacon lighting was held at the Recreation Ground.

Castledown FM played war-time music and the Deputy Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Shirley Ludford, attended, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those involved in D-Day.

Council chairman and mayor, Cllr Owen White, read the D-Day tribute aloud, followed by a speech from the Deputy Lieutenant and the beacon was lit by vice chairman Cllr Michael Williams.   On Saturday, June 8, the council hosted its 80th D-Day Party in the Park on the Rec.

Bands performed at Ludgershall's Party in the Park (Image: Ludgershall Town Council) The day was a huge success with lots of families and friends enjoying themselves, dancing to bands and having fun with all the activities and entertainment provided such as the inflatable axe throwing and football darts, children’s entertainer Krazy Kev and face painting, to name just a few.

A dog show was also held, which was very well attended.

A council spokesperson said: “A very big thank you from us to all involved and a special thanks to Autumn Sammes at 4 Paws Pet Spa for being our judge and for providing such wonderful prizes, you did a fantastic job.

“The prizes didn’t stop there, as many more prizes were awarded to the children’s fancy dress competition, kindly judged by Rev Peter Housen, Rev Tim Laundon and his wife Dawn. A huge congratulations to all who entered you all looked fantastic.”

Throughout the afternoon and evening, there were a number of wonderful performers, especially nine-year-old Kai, who bravely asked to freestyle.

The spokesperson added: “The crowd went wild as Kai rapped alongside ‘Nokando’ Thank you Kai for putting on such a fantastic show, we all thought you were brilliant.”

They continued: “We would also like to thank the small businesses who attended the event your stalls looked wonderful. We hope to be able to work alongside you again in the future.

“Ludgershall Town Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses for providing us with raffle prizes And to congratulate all the lucky winners.

“A final thankyou to all our volunteers, staff and councillors who as always work tirelessly together to get things done to make sure we have the most successful events, what a team.”
