Gordon Reid kept any quarter-final threat at bay to punch his semi-final ticket in style at the LTA’s Lexus British Open Roehampton

The reigning doubles Wimbledon champion was fresh from securing a 50th career title alongside Alfie Hewett in Eastbourne at the LTA’s Rothesay International.

Back in singles action against the Netherlands’ Tom Egberink in Roehampton, Reid soon found his rhythm again on the grass and took the first set before sealing victory with a slightly more comfortable second for a 6-3 6-2 win.

Reid will come up against second seed Gustavo Fernandez for a place in the final after he emerged on the right side of a three-set-thriller against Ruben Spaargaren.

Reid said: “I’m happy to come through in straight sets, he’s a great player and dangerous on grass with his game.

“After a pretty tight start I’m happy with how I started off in the second set.

“I’m happy to get it done with not too much time on court and to feel fresh for the next one.”

Rain delays paused play just before midday but that was after top seed Alfie Hewett secured his place in the final four against fellow Brit Dahnon Ward.

Hewett took a straight sets 6-0 6-0 win over Ward, who is finding a feel for the grass courts this season.

And, coming up against Martin de la Puente in the next round, Hewett knows the British Open can propel him to Wimbledon success, which starts next week.

Hewett said: “This event has been incredible so far, to have the opportunity to be able to play matches the week before Wimbledon is new territory for us.

“It’s obviously a new feeling playing the British Open on grass but it’s really good for our sport.

“It’s progressing nicely, it’s quite a quick transition from playing clay court to grass but I feel like I’ve adapted really well so far.

“Tomorrow will be a tough test so I look forward to that one.”

Elsewhere, French Open runners-up Andy Lapthorne and Guy Sasson made the quad doubles final after beating Heath Davidson and Ahmet Kaplan 7-5 6-2.

It was the double for Lapthorne who took the scalp of Davidson in singles on Tuesday.

It was not meant to be for fellow quad doubles pairing Gary Cox and Greg Slade, who bowed out to top seeds Sam Schroder and Niels Vink 6-2 6-1.

In the women’s doubles, Lucy Shuker and Angelica Burnel fended off a late rally from Abbie Breakwell and Emmanuelle Morch 6-2 6-2 to cruise into the semi-finals.
