AN ANDOVER man has started ukulele lessons for beginners 'prohibited by cost or opportunity', with profits going to charity.

Ivor Evans will run 'Ukejam', a weekly group offering lessons for people of mixed abilities to learn about playing techniques, styles, and music genres.

Ivor said: "Ukejam believes everyone should have the chance to join a group regardless of experience and in an affordable way.

"The benefits of music helping to improve people's general and mental health are well documented but often the opportunity to be able to do so are overlooked."

Ivor says he has 'always been interested in music', starting by playing wind instruments before graduating to the ukulele, getting 'hooked' after a couple of lessons.

The lessons will be held at Hatherden School every Monday evening from 7pm, teaching music in a 'flexible, relaxed way' in which 'folks will have time to learn at their own speed'.

At a cost of £2-£3 per lesson, Ivor said he thinks people with an interest in playing the ukulele 'should not be hampered by cost or opportunity'.

He continued: "People come to the group for a number of reasons but one common thread runs through, it's fun, it's fulfilling and it makes them feel better."

Proceeds from the lessons will be donated to local charities, with an emphasis on those operating within the vicinity of the school, says Ivor.

He finished: "This has only been made possible with the help and co-operation of James Place Adult Daycare Ltd who operate from Hatherden School, and shares the same ethos of promoting learning and opportunity for all."
