A HUNDRED years of Andover Carnival will be celebrated this weekend, as the huge community event takes place on Sunday, July 21.

More than 30 groups, charities and businesses will take part in what is set to be the largest procession in Andover’s history.

The procession will leave Weyhill Road at 4pm, making its way through the town at around 5pm, including along Bridge Street, Eastern Avenue and East Street, ending up at Vigo Park at 5.45pm.

Throughout the day at Vigo Park there will be an array of entertainment, more than 50 stalls and a fun fair for people to enjoy from 12-9pm.

From 12pm to 7pm artists will be performing on The KJM Stage, kicking off with Paul Jade Wilson and ending with Torn Off Strips.

Plenty of activities have been organised on the high street by InAndover, from Andover BID, with afternoon of fun including circus skills workshops, crafting, The Life Bus, facepainting and alpacas from 12-4.30pm.

A stage will also be set up in the town centre, with Paul Hewerdine first up and finishing with Swan Samba at 4pm, building up the procession passing through from 5pm.

A post from the organisers on Facebook said: “A reminder today that this year we celebrate an amazing 100 years of Andover Carnival. A truly historic tradition continues this year by taking over the High St, Vigo Park and the streets of our town for procession worthy of this celebration.”

Organisers are asking residents to spare a few pennies in collection buckets throughout the event.

This year the carnival hopes to raise enough money to support Purple Oak with the development of a sensory garden in one of its respite centres and support up to 20 girls from low-income backgrounds to spend a whole year enjoying what Girlguiding Andover has to offer.

Road closures will be in place during the event, including The Drove to Mylen Road which will be closed 12.30-5pm; Mylen Road, down to Weyhill Road, through town to London Road 3.30-7pm; and London Road to Bachelors Barn Road 4-8pm.
