RESIDENTS in Andover are being urged to 'remain vigilant' following reports of vehicles being broken into and items being stolen.

Officers received a number of reports that people have entered vehicles before stealing cash, bankcards and other valuable items.

Seven incidents were reported to police between August 6 and August 8, on Cypress Grove, Blueberry Gardens, Poppy Close, Hibiscus Crescent, and Weyhill Road.

Hampshire Constabulary said it believes the incidents are linked.

The force is now asking residents to follow crime prevention advice to avoid their cars being targeted.

A spokesperson explained that car thefts are 'often opportunistic' and that offenders will 'try car handles' hoping that the vehicle is unlocked.

They added that residents should 'remain vigilant' as well as ensuring they look at all car doors, and remove valuables from their vehicles.

The spokesperson continued: "Your mobile phone, coins for the car park, sunglasses, packs of medication or other items that can earn quick cash are irresistible to the opportunist thief.

"Remember, the cost of replacing a window is often much more than that of what was stolen.

"Make sure to physically check that doors and windows are locked, especially if you have used the remote to lock the vehicle, then look inside again to make sure you’ve not left anything on display, including ensuring that your glove box is closed.

"If you witness any suspicious behaviour, or if you have been a victim, please contact police on 101 or on our website: hampshire.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime"
