A CHARITY shop has closed its doors in Andover after two decades.

The Cancer Research UK charity shop, in High Street, closed on August 24.

The charity issued thanks to all those who supported it over the past 20 years.

Cancer Research UK spokesperson, Ingrid Willis, said: “We’ve had some of the most amazing staff and volunteers in the Andover store and they have done a fantastic job. I want to say a huge thank you to each and every one of them.

“We sincerely hope our customers will continue to support Cancer Research UK and our work towards a world where people can live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer. All are very welcome to shop or donate goods at our nearby stores in Winchester, Basingstoke, Salisbury and Romsey. ”

The charity said that it was 'no longer financially viable to keep the store open'.

While unable to give any specific details on what caused the closure of the shop, area support manager Lisa Chesters said that rent was part of the explanation.

While they cleared out the remaining stock, Lisa thanked shoppers, emphasising that the charity was “well supported by the local community over the years”.

She said: "They’ve been fantastic.”

Customers and fellow businesses expressed their sadness at seeing the shop close.

Vicky Coulson, who works at Mooch, said that rent on the High Street was expensive.

She said: “It’s very sad that Cancer Research has closed. If you can’t maintain a charity shop, there’s no hope.”
