An Andover boxing club hosted one of its three annual home shows last weekend with a splendid night of amateur boxing.

Legacy Boxing Club had 11 of their members step into the ring, joined by three from their Basingstoke branch.

The event opened with junior boxer Arthur Arnold, who participated in his third bout in a skills contest. These contests are designed for young boxers to display their techniques and skills without the pressure of declaring a winner.

Female fighters Grace Davis, Gabrielle Reid, and Maisy Balchin secured clear decision wins against tough opponents.

Andover's Legacy Boxing Club members after their wins (Image: Newsquest) Maisy avenged a narrow loss from last season by landing precise shots on the back foot against a strong competitor.

Grace, in a thrilling bout against a more experienced fighter in her 10th contest, edged a close decision victory after a high-paced final round that had the crowd on its feet.

Gabrielle, competing in her 23rd bout, displayed southpaw boxing to dominate her opponent from Bournemouth, pressing forward and landing clean punches throughout the three rounds.

Rocco Denyer made an impressive debut in a youth contest, landing powerful punches and earning a unanimous decision after forcing his opponent into a standing eight count in the final round.

Anthony Cross, at 39-years-old, fulfilled a lifelong dream when he stepping into the ring. He faced an opponent from Devon, and delivered a strong performance, knocking his opponent down in the first round before forcing a stoppage with a barrage of big punches.

Rising stars Xavier Portman-Pope and Ehizogie Ebikueluye, aged 18 and 19 respectively, secured second-round stoppages against their opponents.

D'Rhys Ince, a highly skilled boxer who recently moved to Andover from London, returned to the ring after a two-year hiatus.

In a closely contested first round against a former sparring partner, D'Rhys shook off the ring rust and dominated the later rounds, using his footwork and counterpunching to secure a convincing victory, extending his amateur record to 12-1.

The final bout of the night saw Quddus Ogenyemi, known as 'Q', enter the ring for his seventh bout in just 10 months.

Despite facing a larger and more experienced opponent, Q's composure and counterpunching proved too much.

In the first round, he landed a powerful combination that left his opponent stunned, prompting the referee to stop the fight.

Legacy Boxing Club coaches Ricki Gayati and Kevin Davis were thrilled with their fighters' performances. Many of the club’s fighters will now turn their attention to the National Championships, which begin on September 14.

Ricki thanked the club’s supporters and local businesses, including Terry Hall of Terry Hall Roofing and Paul Roper of Roper Building.

Legacy Boxing Club’s next home show is scheduled for April 26 at Longmeadow Sports Centre in Whitchurch.
