A church in Andover has been temporarily closed following the discovery of traces of asbestos during a recent survey of the crypt.
St Mary's Church in Andover has announced in a social media post that it has decided to temporarily close the church as a precautionary measure.
The standing committee, in consultation with the area dean, said that it made the difficult decision to close the church due to asbestos concerns while further investigations and professional advice are sought.

The update read: "We are writing to let you know that, following a professional asbestos survey in the crypt of St Mary's, the Standing Committee has been made aware that traces of asbestos have been found. As a precaution and in consultation with the Area Dean it has taken the difficult decision to temporarily close the church whilst further investigation takes place and professional advice is sought. Currently, there is no suggestion that the main body of the church is affected, this is purely a precautionary measure."
While there is no immediate concern about the main body of the church, the closure is aimed at ensuring the safety of parishioners and visitors, the committee said.
To accommodate the regular services, alternative arrangements have been made:
-
9am and 10.45am: Services will be held at the Harris Hall on Church Close.
-
Kids and youth: Services will take place at the vicarage.
For those seeking alternative options, the following Parish churches will be open:
-
8.30am: St Michael's Knights Enham, Enham Lane SP10 4DS (BCP morning prayer)
-
10am: St Pauls, Smannell Road, SP11 6JP
-
10.30am: St Michael's West Andover, Colebrook Way, SP11 6JP (communion)
The churchwardens, area dean, standing committee, and clergy said in the update that they aim to reopen the church as soon as possible.
They have urged parishioners to pray for those involved in the decision-making process and those affected by the change in venue.
