Cyclists pedalled marathon distances around Romsey and Test Valley to raise more than £9,000 for charity.

Cardiac charity Heartbeat's eighth annual cycle sportive event saw people cycle a choice of 70- and 40-mile routes through Romsey, Winchester, Stockbridge, and Broughton, with the longer route extending to Salisbury and the shorter one returning to Romsey via East Tytherley.

The event, on Sunday, September 29, also showcased the beauty of the area, finishing in the grounds of Embley, Romsey.

This year, the event was a joint venture with leading house builder Barratt David Wilson Homes' Southampton division and Hendy Motor Group

Tina Richardson, head of operations at Heartbeat, said: "There was a great turnout on the day and thanks to Barratt we were able to raise an amazing £9,500 for Heartbeat.

"We’d also like to thank Hildon Water for keeping everyone hydrated, as well as Hendy Motor Group and Giant for their support too, and not to mention Embley for letting us access the grounds.

"The money raised will make a huge amount of difference to us and we are so grateful for Barratt’s and everyone’s support. Thank you."

The funds raised from the event will go a long way in supporting Heartbeat's initiatives.

The charity, which aims to improve the quality of life for people with heart conditions, greatly benefits from such fundraisers, which enable them to continue their vital work.

The successful turnout and funds raised have provided a promising start to Heartbeat's partnership with Barratt Southampton.

Cycle sportives are long-distance, organised cycling events, much like running a marathon but on a bike.

They aim to test all-round bike riding skills rather than flat-out speed, offering riders the camaraderie and thrill of being part of a large group of riders.
