A show is coming to a Hampshire theatre that will celebrate the shipping forecast.

The show Attention All Shipping – A Celebration of the Shipping Forecast will be performed at The Lights on Tuesday, October 29, at 7:30pm.

The show will be performed by Charlie Connelly, a bestselling author and award-winning broadcaster.

Mr Connelly's show will celebrate the UK's shipping forecast, which is a BBC radio broadcast about the weather at sea around the British Isles and is listened to by many people in the UK.

As the shipping forecast embarks on its second century, Mr Connelly's show will bring the quirky broadcast vividly to life, celebrating what he regards as the greatest invention of the modern age.

He will delve into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, explain what those curious phrases mean, and celebrate its wide cultural impact.

He will also share rip-roaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas.

The show is inspired by Mr Connelly's bestselling book, Attention All Shipping: A Journey Round the Shipping Forecast, which has sold more than a quarter of a million copies.

The book tells the fascinating story of the shipping forecast, a British institution which has been broadcasting for more than 150 years.

The show has sold out venues up and down the country, from the Eden Court in Inverness to the Acorn Theatre in Penzance.

It was also featured on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme in January 2024 and on BBC1’s The One Show in October 2024.

Mr Connelly said: "I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly whose knowledge of what I call ‘the ships’ is excellent.

"Sou’westers optional."

Fi Glover, a broadcaster, said: "Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with.

"He has a natural wit that doesn’t get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it."

Bernard Sumner, of New Order, said: "Charlie is always warm, funny and engaging.

"I actually sent him a fan letter - and I've never done that to anyone in my life before."
