An army officer has admitted that he stole almost £1m from the British Army.

Jed Charlot, of Chichester Close in Andover, was charged with fraud by abuse of position, theft by employee and possession of criminal property in military barracks in Tidworth.

At a hearing at Salisbury Crown Court on Wednesday, October 16, he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Charlot abused his position as quarter master sergeant by intending to make a personal gain of £900,000, as well as stealing money of that value, and using, having or possessing it.

The offences took place between December 1, 2021, and October 31, 2022, at 6 Armoured Batt REME Military Barracks in Tidworth. The money is said to have belonged to the British Army/Ministry of Defence.

Charlot had indicated no plea at a hearing in Salisbury Magistrates' Court on Friday, September 6.

Following that, a trial date was set, which was set to begin on Wednesday, October 16.

However, at the start of the trial, Charlot pleaded guilty to the charge.

He came to the court with a backpack as he was expecting a custodial sentence.

However, judge Richard Parkes released him on bail considering his previous good character and set Friday, December 13, as the sentencing day.

Defending, Cowe Mary said Charlot accepts the criminality on full fact basis.

She said that the defendant now resides at an Army accommodation in Tidworth, and he would need time to arrange the accommodation of his family before the sentencing.

Tom Wilkins appeared for the prosecution.
