Four butchers in Stockbridge have shaved their heads in support of a colleague who has recently been diagnosed with blood cancer.
The men, who all work at John Robinson’s Butchers on the town’s High Street, hatched the plan after work in the pub on Friday evening. James Robinson explained: “We know our friend will probably lose all his hair when he starts chemotherapy, so we just thought, let’s shave our heads in solidarity.”
James said their colleague was emotional when he found out: “Although he knows we’re all good mates, he said our support brought a tear to his eye.”
The team has also raised an incredible £1000 in the first three days of their fundraising appeal on behalf of MacMillan Cancer Support.
James said: “We’ve had so many incredible messages online as well as customers who’ve not only donated but have shared stories about cancer, whether it’s a personal story or advice. We’ve been really touched.”

One post on social media said: “Well done guys, you make us proud.” And another read: “You are amazing, it’s very much appreciated for cancer research.”
The butchers have set up a page on Just Giving and can be reached on Facebook, posting: “Many of us have been touched by cancer, whether through friends, family or colleagues. It’s a cause close to our hearts. Any donations appreciated!’
James said “This shop has been in the town since the 50’s, we’re the fifth generation of butchers and over the years we’ve built a close-knit community, so naturally we support our colleagues and customers. We’d hate to see one of us go through something like this alone.”
But James admitted that the head shave had given them a bit of a headache - their hair is growing back - so they’re preparing themselves for another cut this weekend,
You can donate to MacMillan online or by going to John Robinson Family Butchers' Facebook page or at the shop on Stockbridge High Street.
