AN AUTOMOBILE racing club in Andover could relocate to a larger building to support the club's ambitions for 'expansion and future investment'.

The British Automobile Racing Club has asked Test Valley Borough Council for permission to build an extension to the Thruxton Centre in the Thruxton Aerodrome.

The club is currently headquartered in a building to the south of the circuit, underneath one of the grandstands, however, it says it is 'ageing' and 'is not fit for purpose'.

It added: "The building is physically constrained by the grandstand, meaning there is a lot of space which is not useable due to the height available."

The building also offers 'little to no soundproofing' meaning that the club's employees are unable to work in the offices during race days.

All staff currently working in the grandstand building would be relocated to the Thruxton Centre under the plans, which would also see the centre extended to include meeting rooms, a staff room, a training area and an open-plan office space.

The extension will also provide another entrance to the building, which will feature a reception space, to allow the secondary entrance to be used to accommodate a car 'so that hands-on training can be given about road and race vehicles'.

The BARC is one of the biggest organisations for motor racing in the UK. Formed in 1912, the club underwent several moves before permanently relocating to Thruxton in 1968.

The application concludes: "The proposed extension is therefore necessary to support the future expansion and investment of this locally and nationally important club."
