A local teenager has realised her dreams, after an Andover charity and a pub in Broughton teamed up to offer youngsters an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in the hospitality sector.

Kids on Track offers activity camps during the school holidays for children from the Andover area. Organisers aim to work with the children, offering them a mentoring programme as they become teenagers, to give them practical support.

A recent partnership with the Greyhound pub in the village of Broughton has allowed teenagers to find out more about the hospitality sector, opening them to new skills and experiences.

Brooke Hicks, a local teenager joined a one-day introduction course, which sparked her interest in the industry.

After a six-week summer holiday programme, where she learned how a busy kitchen operates, Brooke’s enthusiasm and dedication shone through.

She impressed the team at The Greyhound so much she was given a job as a full-time commis chef apprenticeship.

Brooke said: “I enjoy the supportive environment and ‘fun kitchen banter’, which makes learning an enjoyable experience and has helped me grow in confidence.”

Under the guidance of chefs Ryan Lamb and Liam Mason, Brooke is learning a variety of culinary techniques and proving to be a valuable asset to the team.

Emma Eliot from Kids on Track said: "Brooke’s journey is a testament to the positive impact that local businesses and charities like Kids on Track can have on young people, providing them with the tools and encouragement they need to succeed in the workforce."
