A steam train will be transformed into a winter wonderland this Christmas.

The Watercress Line's annual Steam Illuminations event will be back from November 29, 2024, to January 4, 2025.

Thousands of lights will cover the inside and outside of the train, with new additions including singing Christmas trees and a magical 'Snowlight Cascade'.

The Snowlight Cascade will add to the festive experience as the train takes passengers of all ages along the historic railway route.

The Watercress Line's stunning Steam Illuminations is set to dazzle more than ever before (Image: Steve Morley) Rebecca Dalley, CEO of the Watercress Line, said: "Steam Illuminations is a much-loved seasonal tradition at The Watercress Line and this year we are delighted to announce an even more dazzling display with stunning lighting effects, singing Christmas trees and the new Snowlight Cascade.

"It will be an unforgettable festive treat, capturing the spirit of the season and fantastic fun for all.

"Make sure you book your seats on Steam Illuminations as soon as possible, as some trains have already sold out."

On board, passengers will enjoy a 'sound to light' show, with LED lights synchronising with their festive wristbands to create a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns.

The lighting display was created by Simon Horn, the Steam Illuminations lighting designer, who combined his knowledge of The Watercress Line as a volunteer train driver with his technical expertise.

He designs and programs lighting for concert tours of pop acts such as Anastacia, Olly Murs and Westlife.

The inside of the train is as much part of the show as the outside, with the 'Canopy of Lights' sparkling in every carriage.

The interactive experience will be hosted by the 'Voiceover Man' (as heard on Britain's Got Talent and X-Factor), who will encourage passengers to compete in the singalong FlashyOke game.

Big Christmas hits will play on board until December 28 to get everyone in the festive spirit.

From December 29, there will be more of a party atmosphere with favourite pop anthems playing from the 1960s to present day.

Steam Illuminations trains will depart from either Alresford or Alton and complete a round trip.

The journey lasts approximately one hour 45 minutes.

Festive treat boxes, filled with seasonal treats, and drinks boxes can be pre-ordered and collected on arrival at the station before departure.

Tickets can be booked at watercressline.co.uk/steam-illuminations.
