PLANS to completely refurbish a Grade II listed pub have been submitted.

If approved, the application will see The White Lion, Winchester Road, Wherwell, not only refurbished but have an extension and landscaping work done.

The proposals in the application, submitted by Paul Cashin Architects on behalf of Alice Valdes Scott, include a new entrance building extension, in place of the "poor quality" toilet block. The bar and dining/drinking areas will also be refurbished.

The existing fire places will be reinstated in the Public Lounge and Upper restaurant areas "which will help to retain the pub feel, whilst the Lower Restaurant will feel more like a restaurant in atmosphere."

Proposals include the replacement of the kitchen in the north east corner of the building and in its place a new fully electric catering kitchen with pass/wash area.

Furthermore, accommodation suites will be refurbished to "improve the quality of the guest experience," and it is proposed that the barn becomes a morning cafe space for the village and passing trade, with the open space featuring loose seating and a small serving counter at the north end.

The existing timber frame will be refurbished inline with historic structural practices and the inner face of the exterior walls will be cleaned and repaired with a lime wash to help seal the cob and flint elements.

The catering offer is proposed as hot drinks and breakfast foods such as cold dishes, bread meals, soups and jacket potatoes etc. It is not proposed that alcohol be served in this area.

Landscaping plans are also proposed for the courtyard area, including a dividing planter with feature trees to provide shade in the summer.
