An event to mark the celebration of Onam, the traditional harvest festival of the Indian state Kerala, has left organisers looking forward to building lasting friendships with the local community.
The Andover Malayalam Association (AMA) welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress of Test Valley, Councillor Ian Jeffrey and Mrs Maura Jeffrey at the celebration last month.
Secretary of the AMA, Sara Paul said: “Your recognition, respect, and warm acceptance of our community are deeply appreciated, and we look forward to many more moments of cultural exchange and friendship in the future.”
Since then, a coffee morning allowed members of the AMA to highlight the role that cultural traditions play in shaping identity and fostering a sense of belonging.

Mrs Paul said: “We shared our collective belief in the importance of integrating our Kerala heritage with British values, enriching both in the process.
“Their appreciation for our commitment to preserving and sharing our culture was heart-warming and inspiring. On behalf of the Andover Malayalam Association, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Mayor, Mayoress, and all the guests, Mrs Annette Carpenter and Mrs Fiona Sanecka-Manson who attended the coffee morning at The Upper Guildhall.”
In October, guests attending an elaborate Onam Sadya, were treated to a sumptuous vegetarian feast served on banana leaves, which is a hallmark of the festival.
In his address, Mayor Geoffrey praised the Malayali community for their hospitality and expressed admiration for their commitment to preserving and sharing their cultural traditions.
